A exfoliate is abrasive to your skin....just like taking sand paper to a piece of rusted metal.
Your skin constantly renews it's self...therefor leaving dead skin cells on the surface which cause your skin to appear dull.....exfoliating will remove those dead skin cells. If you take St.Ives Apricot scrub for instance...it has ground Apricot pits in it=abrasive.Hope that helps!

Your on the right track but there is more to it than that. Scrubbing your skin with a scrubber will exfoliate you to some degree but the most effective way is laser exfoliating where a technician uses a laser to burn away the outermost layer of dead skin. Ouch! Expensive too.

NO DO NOT USE ANYTHING HARSH!!
Exfoliating is gently taking the top old dead layer of cells off your face or body. Salt Scrubs for the body are lovely, but on your face use something made just for it. I use MaryKay's 2 part system
Here's a wonderful MK lady's site look up this product is great.http://www.marykay.com/mbrady
