I'm mainly a runner, and I bike around town on my mountain bike from wal-mart. I know I need to buy a good road-racing bicycle to start out on.

Trek 1000 has a suggested retail price of $709.99. You might be able to find it cheaper if you need a common size (if you are about average height).

Bicycling Magazine rated this one very high this year and a friend at work, who has a much more expensive bike, bought one for commuting to work and he loves it.

Even if you have to put out about $100 more than you were wanting to spend, it'll be worth it. Plus - It never hurts to have the guys at the bike shop on your side.

a good starting bike is the Trek 1000. my shop had one for about $600 and has pretty descent parts on it. its not a superlight racing bike, but will work if you plan to do beginner racing. if you want something cheaper, go to ***** or Sports authority. ive seen roadies there for about $550. i dont think you can get a road bike cheaper than that.

if you plan to break into racing seriously, then make sure you have alot of bank to back you up. road racing get rediculously expensive because of all the carbon and titanium. every ounce counts - literally

You might be able to find a sale on an entry-level model like a trek 1000. You would be pretty much limited to steel frame and tiagra or sora components at that price. That's not so bad though. It would be a huge improvement over your wal-mart ride though. Or you could get a better used bike on e-bay.

List your frame size, ability (racing/touring), and I'll post a request on our team message board.
