If the blood is bright red then she probably has hemorrhoids or a fissure or possibly colitis. If the blood is blackish then she has something wrong in her throat, stomach or bowels. Hemorrhoids is the probable cause and she needs to drink more water, eat more fiber, not get constipated and see her family Dr to make sure there are no serious issues causing the bleeding.

it could be a number of things, Crohn's disease, Colitis, polyps, an ulcer, cancer... the list goes on. yes it is very important to go to a doc. they'll do stool samples to determine exactly why she is bleeding. it could be hemmoraging. that's dangerous. it depends on how much blood as to what it could be. they'll also do blood work and maybe a scope. she could also have chronic constipation which could lead to straining and blood. what's important is if she is having other symptoms as well. Crohn's and Colitis are digestive diseases, that although are not fatal, are very very serious. i know. i have crohns

I can assure you it is not caused by reading while on the toilet.
I could simply be hemorrhoids or constipation. Or diseases as mentioned by others answering your question. The best thing for her to do is see a doctor and get it treated.
