Occult Means "Hidden". Not "Bad" or "weird" or Different, just Hidden, or secret. Wicca is an Initatory Mystery religion.

Hence the Goddess' HIDDEN Children.

Hope that helps!
Blessed be.

Well I honestly thought that Wicca was an earth religion and not part of the occult. I basically think of the occult as being astrology, tarot cards, ouiji boards, that sort of thing.

However dont wiccans use spells? I guess that is why people would think of it as part of the occult.

The vast majority of people in America (maybe worldwide) dont know much at all about wicca. I don't know much about it myself. I would say that miseducation and lack of education are the reasons people refer to it as part of the occult..unless it really is.

Because it is an occult path. It is a mystery religion that deals with magic. That makes it an occult path. Also it has it's origins in the occult as a lot of the structure of Wiccan rituals was borrowed from the ceremonial magic practices of groups such as the Golden Dawn.

It doesn't make it bad by any means. Occult means "secret" as in secret wisdom.

Because it is. It's not a "cult", though Christan's may think so, but the study and learning we go through can be considered occult, as it does involve learning about spells and such. It's really not occult any more, as the basic information can be found just about any where. There are levels of knowledge that you can only gain with experience, but that's the same with anything one really works at.

Because it is. "Occult" simply means "secret" or "hidden." The naturalistic religions delve deeply into the "natural mysteries of the earth and universe." It doesn't mean that Wicca is a cult, per se, though you can easily make that argument. I would call Wicca, to be precise, a pagan religion.

Occult means underground religion. Wicca is pretty underground, or at least it was until recently. Occult doesn't mean cult. Those are two entirely seperate words with seperate meanings.

Some spiritual paths have no traditions of secrecy, no history where parts of their path was hidden to keep it safe. One latin word that indicates hiding is 'occlude'. Another is 'occult'. (from the same root).

Even if everything involved in your tradition has now been revealed to all of the world, it came from the occult so it will always be occult.
Besides, has everything been revealed?

(( Yo, Chucky, get with the program...not all Wiccans are witches, and not all witches are Wiccans...just like not all Christians are deacons....

Definition of "occult":

"of or pertaining to magic, astrology, or any system claiming use or knowledge of secret or supernatural powers or agencies."

I do believe Wiccans practice magick. Of course, Christians and Muslims could be considered a part of the occult also. "Occult" and "cult" are not the same thing. "Occult" is a belief, "Cult" is a practice.

Do what makes you happy.

UFO, they do use tarot cards and astrology.

It is part of the occult because they summon spirits to help them with their spell work. Everytime they do this, they risk making contact with a spirit at the lower plan that pretends to be good and whoever they want that spirit to be when infact it's an evil one playing mind games to cntrol them. Occult means the following:

I'm sure you can see how some of those definitions would pertain to Wicca. It is not really a bad thing. :)
