This cork is very dry and crumbly, and the entire top half broke off while we were trying to open the bottle. I found several articles that suggested just pushing the cork into the bottle when dealing with wine, but I'm assuming the pressure would make this a bad idea with champagne? Any suggestions?

We had already tried the corkscrew. It is what broke the cork in the first place. Tried it again after it broke and it just tore it up even more.

We got it now though. Thanks for all your answers!

Put a small hole in it to release the pressure, then it will either pop out are you can push it through

First get some ice and put it in the bottle to harden the cork. The colder the cork the harder it gets. Then gently but firmly reinsert the corkscrew as deep into the cork as possible. use firm slow pressure to pull the cork out. Otherwise push the cork through and and filter the champagn.

Just use the same screw down wine opener which will allow you to pull the cork up.

Put a towel over the stopper and twist it out. Go back and forth both ways. Get someone stronger if you can. Don't use a corkscrew. The contents are under pressure...although cider is not as bubbly as champagne. Still be careful. Salute!

Chill it first, then push the cork in. Or warm it and shake it.
