Diet soda is always best because it has no sugar or calories, but if you are starting a diet, drink plenty of water to flush your system and cleanse your body. I read that adding ice cubes to water burns calories because your body temperature cools down and then has to warm up again causing you to burn those fat calories :).

diet soda is only better in the since that your not getting the calories that you would with regular soda. But i would say this the lab produced sugar that they put in it is linked to migranes and other problems and no one really knows if its completely save to consume in large doses. My mom lost 50 lbs from switching from regular to diet. I would say this its a lifestyle change and just eat right and never over do it with anything and its fine. (took nutrition in college keep books on it and also been to a nutritonist)

All sodas are bad. calorie wise, if you must drink soda then choose diet. I have to tell you that after years of consuming diet sodas I quit cold turkey in November because I was in so much pain(head, eye, neck and ear) from the stuff called aspartame and phenylalanine which is found in diet and sugar free products. DRINK WATER!!!

I know it is hard, but it would be a good idea to cut out soda pop as you diet. Even Diet Colas can impede what your dieting effort is trying to accomplish.
Determine to go for a month without soda pop and see how it goes.

As long as there are no calories it won't impact your diet/caloric intake. I tend to avoid diet sodas that contain aspartane just because they have been implicated in health risks. I go for the newer drinks that contain Splenda.
