I just baked a cake for tomorrows New Years Eve Party but should I spread the icing now or tommorow?

if you want a soft moist cake put the cake in the freezer for about 12 hours till it's almost completely frozen solid then put the icing on. Keep it refrigerated until about 4 hours till the party.

The freezing will trap the water in the cake and then the icing will keep the moisture inside the cake so it doesn't dry out.

As most have said, wait for the cake to completely cool. Spreading icing on a hot, or even a warm, cake will make it melt.

After an hour or so, spread the icing. The cake may tear if it is very soft, so use the knife to stir the icing until it is more soft and spreads easy. When you have completely iced the cake (do not use all the icing yet!) you may notice pieces of cake visible through the icing. This is just some of the cake that tore off when you iced it. Put the cake in the refrigerator and allow the icing to crust/harden a bit (about 20 minutes). This will sort of be like a protective coating for your second application of icing, which will look perfect, with no crumbs visible.

You ice a cake soon after baking it (when it cools, but not the next day) because the icing will prevent the cake from becoming stale and crusty, as it acts as a barrier, protecting the cake from the air. If you waited until tomorrow, the outside layer of your cake would be stale. Not very palatable or appealing!

Hope this helps, good luck.

If you are going to warm the icing, what would be the point in letting the cake cool? You should wait until the cake is cool. To make icing spread easier, whip it a little with a spoon.

NOT NOW. Wait at least an hour, or until the cake is cooled. If you are not in a hurry, tomorrow is good. Icing will melt off of a warm cake and be a big puddle all around the edges of the cake by morning.

Spread the icing on while the cake is hot and you'll have a gooey nasty mess. Wait till the cake cools off a bit and the icing will spread on nicely. Have fun at your party!

No, cool the cake and then run the knife under hot water. Spread icing on cake. Wash off crumbs if they get on the knife. When finished, put in fridge until tomorrow night. Good luck.

Never put icing on your cake until it is completely cool.
However, I would put the icing on tomorrow so it's really fresh for your guests.

anytime after the cake is thoroughly cooled. Warm cake will cause your frosting to melt and slide off
