What is the best handgun and machine gun available? Machine guns are generally unavailable, to the general public anyway.
Handguns are a matter of personal choice. Do you want a wheelgun? Do you want an auto loader? The best handgun is the one that fits your hand, that you can hit the target with and that is THERE when you need it.
In revolvers I favor the Colt Python .357 magnum but I don't feel underarmed with a S&W .357 or Ruger .357. In auto loaders I favor the Glock Model 20 .10mm; in cowboy guns I favor the Ruger 'old' Vaquero in .38-40/.10mm/.40S&W--but that's just me.

Handgun: .45ACP 1911, Custom smithing shop; Wilson Combat personally
In terms of power a Smith & Wesson .500 takes it with a Desert Eagle .50 AE being the strongest semi-auto.
Glock 18 as fastest firing.(1100 – 1300 rounds/min!!!)
Machine gun the 7.62x51 FN-MAG (M-240 US designation)
Ma Duece (M-2 .50 BMG/12.7x99) and its newer improved variants such as the M2 E-50 are great, the pinnacle of heavy machine guns, but not something you can use without a stationary tripod or a vehicle mount.
FN MAG - almost 3,000 rounds between stoppages (jam/failure to fire) in government testing and almost 6,500 rounds between failure (firing pin fracture, ect...) And on the front lines reliability counts more than anything. Also the power of the 7.62 round gives it the edge over FN Minimi (M-249)
But for CQB work the M249 in E4 or Mk 46 version is hard to beat.
Edit: H&K Mk 23 is nice but the MP5 and UMP are not machine guns they are submachine guns, but they are the best sub-machine guns.

The ones that are there when you need them :-P
Seriously, that is an extremely open ended question and you are more than likely going to get several different answers. Most people would agree that the 1911 (45 ACP) and the Browning M2 (50 cal) would at least be in the top 5 of both categories.
Good Luck!

The best you say..mmmm, Glocks are used around the world by most Governments, LE and civilians like myself, I own 3 of them..2 G35s and 1 G23 all in the famous S&W40cal. HK's 91 is a truly an awsome weapon (in full auto), it shoots a 308 round, HK's little MP5 is a fun 9mm but so is the very famous UZI in the 9mm

What an open-ended question! All a question like that does is give an excuse for someone to boast what they shoot. Boring.
But ok, how about a .25 Raven (the special "chrome model") and a 1895 Colt "potato digger". There you go, buddy.
