A NiCad battery is good for about 1000 charge/discharge cycles. It holds less power than the other batteries, self-discharges faster and can get what is called "memory effect" that limits its capacity. It also requires special disposal due to the cadmium. NiMH and LiIon batteries and lead acid are good for about 350 to 500 charge/discharge cycles. NiMH holds about 50% more power than the NiCad. LiIon holds its charge longer. The lead acid is best when being charged whenever it is not being used.

depends on the battery but you can recharge most batteries in a charger as many times as you like but if the battery starts leaking or stops holding the charge you should stop should be several 1000 charges down the line if you use the battery a lot.
just don't try recharging a non rechargeable battery.
