its knotted hair and dread wax. Basically you start with really clean hair and knot it into dreads, dread wax helps to keep it together.

The hair follicles mesh together after the hair has been twisted or "locked" together for quite some time. I think it can take anywhere from 6 months to two years for them to mature.

not sure what you mean by the knotting process either.. but yea.. there is usually like an inch of undreaded hair, and then dreads. sometimes you might have to rootrub a bit, but after a while they just sorta do their own thing.

Put rubber bands or twists around it. Some people shouldn't wash their hair. Twist it. Tease it with a comb to get it tangled. Etc.
