The presumption in your post is that the reality of demons is contra indicative to critical thinking. Well, we have a problem. The presumption is debatable in the extreme. I've met, seen, and cast out too many to deny their existence. Look in an addict's eyes who needs a fix, watched the terror on a child's face as daddy comes home to abuse again, observe a person fighting the urge to commit suicide. The demons are there, right along the feelings, genetic programing and chemical imbalances.

Depens, each person has their own opnion on what demons are. Demons could be a little goblin like creature that are evil, a demon could be a memory that torments you because it was a bad deed, etc.

As with everything, ask 10 different people and you'll get 13 different answers.

Because a person doesn't believe in something they don't understand, doesn't negate it's existence.
Why is it so hard to envision a race of beings that are unlike us that exist in another universal plane (Spiritual Plane) and yet believe in the existence of 10 or 11 different dimensions co-existing side by side? (Universal String Theory)

Satan is certainly smarter than any one who doesn't believe he exists as it makes it easier for him to manipulate them. For a good description of Satan read Ezekiel Ch.28 V.13-19
