When the larger stars formed there was more matter in the hydrogen cloud to form the star than was available when our sun formed. Since our planets have a significant amount of elements above helium and even iron, we know that much of the gas cloud our solar system was formed from came from the remnants of an exploding star (probably much bigger than our sun is). The reason is that the elements above iron are only made in exploding stars. So that exploding star may have blown away much of the hydrogen gas that would have made our sun larger.

There are smaller ones too. If you get too much smaller there isn't enough mass to start the fusion reaction so they aren't stars. You can get a lot bigger before the gravity becomes too great and it causes them to collapse on themselves. Stars are formed by gravity collecting matter so it just depends on how much there is around.
This really isn't a religious question. You will get a better answer from someone in the astronomy section.

Some stars form out of larger initial clouds of material. More stuff = larger star. Was that really so hard? Why did some people think we needed to ask god for help on this one?

Because at the end of a star's life, It will use up everything it had in reserve, causing it to swell up 100 fold before exploding in a super nova

Oh, well... we can't have the biggest things always.
Can't we?
And yes, even if you don't hear the sound they make, trees fall all over the earth, all the time.
