It's not healthy to eat only 500 calories a day! But if you must know here's a handy calculator

Eating 500 cals a day is dangerous apart from maybe the odd day or two here or there.

A female of your weight and build will need about 1100 calories a day just to tick over - that's before you do anything so much as lifting a finger.

5'8" and size 6ish is an excellent figure and you shouldn't be looking at loosing weight.

You can't have much body fat on you so any drastic reduction in calorie intake isn't going to cause you to lose a great deal of weight because you don't have the reserves to draw on. I'd estimate a weight loss in the order of 7 to 12 pounds but it would be an unhealthy weight loss.

Even for a larger figure trying to lose weight quickly brings with it many hazards and any weight loss program should be gradual, realistic, planned and over a period of time.

If you lead an average lifestyle you'll be burning about 1900 cals a day, say 1500 if you have a sedentary lifestyle, 2500 if active, 3000 if very active. A 10 to 15% reduction in daily calorific intake will reduce weight in a safer and more controlled manner.

But do you need to lose weight anyway? An ideal weight for a lady of 5 foot 8 would be in the region of 130 to 150 pounds. Less than that and you're already underweight, over that and you can safely lose a few pounds - try eating a little less and exercising a little more.

500 and less is what someone with an eating disorder eats.

That is too drastic for your body. It'll go into starvation mode and will conserve...thereby you'll defeat yourself by NOT losing the weight you want to lose.

Talk to a dietitian or do some research online for a decent diet. What you are attempting is not. You are to lose no more than 2-3 lbs a week for it to be healthy.

Every pound is 3,600 calories. Take your body weight and multiply by 15,16,17,18,19, or 20 (15 being no exercise, 20 being a bunch of exercise....choose 17 if you're somewhere in the middle).

This is number of calories your body burns per day. If your are set on only eating 500 calories a day, take the number of calories per day that you're burning and subtract the amt of calories you're taking in.

BUT: 500 calories per day is WAY to low. You can do that for 3-4 days, but after that, your body will start to conserve energy (burn fewer calories....known as "starvation mode). 1,200 calories per day is the minimum for any diet. The benefit of eating a tiny amount for a day or two is that it shrinks your stomach, and makes you less hungry in the following days.

One thing to keep in mind is that many people (especially in Asia "fast" once per week). They drink just water, tomato juice, and most take a vitamin. So one to two days won't kill you.

Eat small, nutritious meals, 2-3 times per day. Take a multivitamin, and get plenty of exercise. Don't eat late at night.

But PLEASE....make sure you don't plan to eat 500 calories or less for more than a day or two. You HAVE to return to at least 1,200 calories per day as a minimum.

And don't worry too much about losing weight. Society puts too much pressure on women as far as weight is concerned. I'm a guy..I don't feel that pressure and I think it's ridiculous what the media has done to women.

If you want to loose weight then eat 1,000 cal's a day and exercise. If you eat less than that you rick endangering your health. Just make sure to exercise and make what you eat count. Have a decent breakfast (fruits, maybe oatmeal), for lunch maybe a yogurt, and for dinner a salad or light meal. And have snacks throughout the day. There are plenty of low cal snacks like pickles and celery.

500 calories a day will destroy your immune system, weaken your muscles, possibly causing a sever drop in blood glucose resulting in fainting and injury, poor complexion and decreased brain function!
The standard healthy caloric intake should be between 1700 and 2000 .....why in God's name would want to consume only 500 calories a day??? You are 5'8"....and a size 6...do you think you are FAT?? Calories are akin to gas in your car...you need it as fuel!! Eat healthy foods and take supplements and EXERCISE!!!
or seek professional help before you do major damage to yourself!
I am 6'3" and weigh 206 lbs and consume about 3500 calories a day and I am considered very fit....and damn nice looking for an old Marine!

Okay, first of all, DO NOT DO THAT! You should definitely be eating more than just 500 calories... that is extremely unhealthy. Secondly, you cannot just one day say, "Oh, I'm going to modify my diet like this, and it'll be fine." It doesn't work that way. You need to GRADUALLY make your diet smaller, day by day. You can't just go from 2,000 calories to 500! You'll starve to death (and by the way, you lose less by starving than by eating properly in portion control and working out). Modify what you eat. Stick with things like nuts, granola bars, yogurt, fruit, vegetables, grains, limit the meat, limit the snacks, and there you go. Never completely eliminate, by the way. You'll just eventually crack and go on a binge if you rule out chips and cookies entirely.
I recommend exercise. You should do lots of cardio, including running, jogging, walking, aerobics, jumping, etc. If you want, you can jump in your own house to some music, run on a treadmill in front of the TV... run outside with an iPod. Whatever gets your heart pumping. You'll lose weight this way.

By the way, don't weigh yourself constantly. You should be limited to once a week. Otherwise, you might get discouraged.

Hi Harajuku Girl:
Please do not do that - you will gain weight because you are putting your body into starvation mode. This means then, that if you make it starve, it will grab whatever you put in and store it as fat - in protection against you!

Eat your 3 daily meals, couple of snacks with a good balance of carbos, protein and fat. Do not skip breakfast. If you are well nourished, you will have more energy, this in turn, makes your metabolism go into higher speed, which also helps into burning the fat.

The secret for loosing weight is: Eat regular meals (no junk), sleep well, exercise everyday and drink at least 8 glasses of water.

I invite you to visit a great website that helps people loose weight in a healthy way:

That's really unhealthy and unless you plan like eating like that for the rest of your life... you are just gonna gain back all the wieght once you strt eating regularly. Trust Me. If you REALLY want to loose weight... go to your local grocery store and pick up this month's Glamour magazine. They have the most amaing article I have ever read for losing weight. It practically lays everything out JUST FOR YOU. It even has a page where you figure out how many calories YOU should eat according to you weight and height and how much you want to lose. They give you meal plans. Exercise plans. Pointers.

Check it out. It will do you tons of good!

And quit the whole 500 calories thing...

For every 3500 calories you cut back, you lose a pound. So do the math as to what you eat now and do the math.

However, from your description, it does not seem you have much to lose. And 500 calories a day is dangerously low. Before going to that level, I urge you to speak with a medical professional or dietician.

IN a week? Not much.

500 calories is not a healthy diet. 800 absolute minimum, 1200 is better.

I'm also guessing that you won't lose anything in a week just by reducing your calories because you will go into starvation mode and stop burning calories.

The absolute best way to lose weight in a short amount of time is pilates.
