I am going on a mission trip to the Philippines this spring and I want to learn some Tagalog just for fun. What is the best way, if I don't know a Filipino personally?

Well first of, I think you will find comfort in knowing that many Tagalog words originate from Spain. Like for example bano: both in Spanish and Tagalog means bathroom. Or words like Como esta ( in spanish how are you) BUt in tagalog it would be Kamusta. But honestly, being a Filipino myself you'll be fine speaking English. English has become a somewhat second language amongst the Filipinos.

Words like Salamat (Thank you) would help also. I hope this is all making sense, I'm answering your questions while doing laundry right now. So I really don't have much time to explain. HAVE FUN IN THE PHILIPPINES!!!!

There should be language books, tapes and cds available in your local library. Learning some Spanish words will definitely help.

A dictionary, reference book, movies, etc. If you know a little Spanish, it would be easier, as many of the words/phrases are Spanish-based, derivatives.
