I just watched a show on Discovery Health about a baby in Peru born to dirt-poor parents. The baby was born with a birth defect where her legs were fused. Because of the resemblance to a mermaid, the uneducated villagers were convinced it was due to a water demon impregnating the mother. Now, if they had the internet, they'd come into this forum and would be convinced that science was wrong (despite science and medicine saving the baby). Do we see any parallel to what goes on regularly in here?

I think in certain cases it's right because some parents just can't look after them well enough. On the other hand my sister has a 10 week old baby with Down Syndrome. No one would ever have thought she'd of coped with it especially since Olivia has Complete Atrioventricular Septal Defect, she needs medication 4 times a day and is in and out of hospital a lot. But even though certain family members and even doctors told her to abort (My sister has Depression and slight mental health issues) She kept her and she's done really well! She's an amazing mother to Olivia. And Olivia is a happy little baby. She deserves a life just as much as a baby without defects does. It doesn't make her any different. She's going to be the most amazing niece. I have two nieces and I love them exactly the same. As far as I'm concerned they are both as happy as eachother. Olivia has an amazing future ahead of her and I know for a fact my sister made the right choice in keeping her! I'm SO proud to call Olivia my niece. I show her off to everyone. She's my brave little angel <3

I saw that too, I also saw this episode about a girl with two heads.
http://www.snopes.com/photos/medical/maged.asp
I 've asked people questions about this situation in relation to abortion. The twin's head (prasite) is just that, a head. But a head with a brain. They are both alive and function properly (from the neck up) Now, is seperation (which would save the full twin, but kill the head) worse or the same as abortion? Is this head a human? Is it more alive than a fetus? is it murder? hmmmm?

also, this girl had a birth defect

and people in her country were afriad of her and made similar comments and shummed her until surgery made her better......shame they were so ignorant

Christians do not consider birth defects as demonic. They are birth defects. People abuse their bodies with cigarettes, liquor drugs, sexual activity that passes std's etc, and wonder why innocent babies have to pay for it with their defects? Most birth defects are a by-product of some kind of drug, prescreption, liquor, cigarette etc abuse.

It can be carried down generations just like alcholism can be passed down genetically. God is showing people that there are high prices to pay with unrightous living. The sins of the father being passed down to the son.

I am a Christian and I have never heard another Christian refer a birth defect as being demonic. Where do you get these ideas from? Pshew!

Religion was used to explain things of this nature eons ago because at the time science was not advanced enough to explain what was going on. Unfortunately, many civilizations have not grown past these superstitions to believe the truth. It is a sad ignorance of the world, and religion is much to blame for it.

Quite a bit. Despite knowing better, many people cling to superstitions about demons, young Earths, and worldwide floods.

Certainly you are not saying some of the people on this forum are as backward as these uneducated Peruvian farmers.

always wise to side with science especially on a science issue.
I guarantee god does not perform surgery. In this venue even such a clear cut point will meet with confusion.

To associate the beliefs of these uneducated villagers to religious beliefs of people who disagree with some scientific views is, in my opinion, a cheap shot.

I have been trying to tell them that their religion is based on ancient superstition resulting from a lack of understanding natural occurences but I can't get through to them.
