It is sometimes not easy to say NO, but sometimes you have to.
Steven Covey in his book The seven habits of highly succesful people actually wrote a very good pice on being able to say NO to people and basically it comes down to what is considered Important and Urgent to you.
Before you can establish that you need to have established within yourself what are your values and what is your personal mission statement about whatever, work , homelife , social events etc
From there you can catagorise what is
A) urgent and important , that is what fits your mission statement and adds to your values, ie does it add value to your family life experience or your pursuit of promotion at work.
B) urgent but not important, that is what can add to your values or help you achieve goals but does not have to be dealt with immediatley,ie are you required to assist others on a special project,
C) important but not urgent, what needs to be dealt with but doesnt add to your values or mission ie you have run out of milk for your morning coffee.
D) Not urgent , not important doesnt add anything to your values or mission. ie taking a phone call from a telemarketer.
After deciding what catogory the request comes in in when you can say no, more often than not the times you will say No is when the request fall sin the c and d catagory.
It can be hard to say NO but when put in the context of Covey you can actually be more selfish saying NO than saying YES,.
Try it , and then you will also find people are less likely to take you for granted
Good Luck

It take practice...start small and work big...my last girlfriend had this problem..she could never say no...she would sacrifice everything and anything to help people, at her own expense because she never could say no....what it came down to with her, is that she did not care enough for herself, she did not value herself to be selfish once in a while and say, i can't do that....what i reccomend is well, find someone who can tell you how much ur worth, and that you don't always have to say yes, it helps when you have some one tellyou that you are worth it...worth saying no...so i hope this helps...but tell someone no on something small...maybe practice when you go out to eat....like tell them you didn't want mayo on ur burger...that is saying no...and work up...good luck, hope this helped....

develop confidence in yourself. Believe that sometimes it is better to say No then to lie or keep people hanging around. Be polite and firm. you owe it to yourself. Appologize if you have to and make people feel that you really want to help but can not.
