I live in a single-family dwelling and we have had an air conditoning/heat pump in since 1993. When fall started this
past year, I began to itch incessantly, particularly my back. Is
it because that the air is dry that it has started happening? And also would a humidifier be beneficial?

Try putting a little dish or jar of water near the heat source in your room...near the heat grill/radiator/heater...and see if that helps. If it does then a humidifier would help. Better off trying a free test then spending $$$ on humidifiers. Hope this helps.

Try testing out what you think.
Put a large pot of water on the stove,
bring it to a boil, then turn it to a simmer.
Do this for a few days and see if you
start to feel better. Also, people tend
to drink less water when it's cold.
Rehydrate yourself by drinking fluids,
they don't have to be cold. It's cocoa time.

My grandma always put a dish of water near all the registers in her home during the dry winter months and it has helped her hands tremendously. Plus one of your favorite lotions would help as well

Also try some anti-fungal ointment. If this takes care of the itch, without the extra humidity, then check out the yeast link at www.hufa.org to learn more about yeast fungus as cause of itching.
