i just got my braces off today. my mom said she signed a paper for the discontinuation. i have like a lil gap and my mom's saying that my teeth might go back to the way it used to. but the ortho asked me if i wanted to take my braces off already..she said that thats just the way my teeth are. my mom keeps saying she only took my braces off cuz i said so. so my question is do u only sign discontinuation if u asked to discontinue having braces or do u always have to sign when u get ur braces taken off? and i cant talk that well with my retainers now..is that really normal..will i get used to it or no? and how many times do i have to brush the retainers? thanks..

No...your treatment was probably not completed but because you signed the discontinuation document you would have to go back to the ortho and restart treatment and pay another few thousand dollars...sorry...your ortho should not have given you the option..he/she should have decided by taking x-ray when you were ready to remove the braces....even when my braces were removed i am still considered a patient because i am required to go every year for a check-up on my permanent retainer

Also not being able to talk with a retainer is very normal..i still wear mine at night and i still can't talk with it....you should always brush it IMMEDIATELY AFTER you remove it from your mouth EVERYDAY!!!! it forms the same plaque as your teeth for and it can grow a bacteria very easily....use ANTIBACTERIAL soap and a toothbrush and rinse it well...because it is not made out of pourous material it will not pick up the taste of the soap....just rinse it well and brush in every nook and cranny....best of luck

1) Signing a contract of discontinuation makes it sound as if you've halted your treatment half-way through. Did you not do everything the dentist asked? Or is your mum having problems with payment? The dentist certainly shouldn't have been asking a child whether they wanted their braces off since that's a decision to be made by the parents or the dentist themselves. I'd consider getting a second opinion about this if you or your mum aren't happy.

2) You'll get used to your retainer if you wear it as often as you can.

3) I cleaned my retainer everytime I took it out, every morning and night and after eating.

4) About the gap in your teeth, I'd ask the dentist if you could have a wire put it (it runs behind your teeth) at least until your wisdom teeth have come through to prevent your teeth moving back. Either that, or you could get a mouth guard to wear at night although that might be more costly.

brush your retainers every time you brush your teeth.
i had trouble talking with them too... but use them!! It's worth it!! and you don't have to wear them as much as time goes on.
Your gap might fill by using the retainers. When I got my braces off I had a couple gaps too that closed in after wearing the retainers for a couple months. You'll have a checkup soon though right? Like in a month or so? I did so they could adjust my retainers. If you're not happy you should go in and talk to your orthodontist.

I think the discontinuation is only for those who don't wear them for the whole 2 to 3 years...and as for the gap, you just have to wear your retainer to get your teeth used to being without your braces, and it will also help your gap close...As far as talking weird, I also have that problem when I wear mine, and yea I always brush my retainer before I go to bed and when I wake up...Whatever you do, don't keep your retainer off for that long, because your teeth will start to separate, I have also had that problem...other than that, if you continue to wear your retainer, your teeth should be fine....Good Luck!

Where is the gap at, I got my braces off and have an un straight tooth, my orthodontist told me the retainers would fix it, still no sucess, but it's not that noticable, the easiest way to talk more clearly with reatainers is to keep wearing them at least 3 months all the time after the braces are off, and maybe try to read aloud in your room after 3 months you can just wear them at night, and to clean them use a denture cleaner tablets(really cheap) just drop both the retainers and the tablet in a cup a water and wait 15 min and they're clean, hope I helped!

I would brush your retainer whenever you brush your teeth so you can get everything out of it. I know when I had my braces taken off last year I don't think my parents signed anything. I still can't talk with my upper retainer in so don't feel bad I just don't use my retainer when i'm around people but when i'm by myself i'll put it back in hope this helps

They only made your parent sign to prevent any future legal problems. Normally, you'd listen to your dentist as to when the time is right. Your teeth may look straight, but the root may not be adjusted to the correct position. I had a gap or diastema in my centrals but they eventually came together and I still wear a retainer because I didn't have my braces on long enough.

Wash your retainer in denture solution everyday & you'll never talk right w/ ur retainer... thats life...

I had braces years ago, had them for little over a year. I did what I was supposed to though and stuck with the plan they had set out for me and my teeth. Thanks mom! hehe....

But the only thing I know is that teeth DO shift after having braces removed unless you follow through with wearing your retainer afterwards as you were instructed to do. Try brushing the retainer at least twice a day, to keep it clean because of the bacteria build-up on it from your mouth throughout the day and night.

Wearing the retainers is very important, so don't stop doing it until your orthodontist has told you that it is ok. You might look into different types of retainers, some can be permanent--but don't stop wearing them just because they are uncomfortable.
I wore braces, and though my teeth are definitely straighter than before the braces were put on them, they are not nearly as straight as they were right when the braces first came off.
