It improves your chances of getting out on day trips, and getting parole. See how many of them stay religious after they get out.

The word penitentiary came from the word repent. Prisons were first made as a place for people to think of the wrong they had done, and repent. Sad that it takes being jailed for some to see that they need help. When your world is falling apart and no one cares, God is there.

I heard a Lawyer tell a woman once, that a young man who had broken the law would be going to jail for a few years, and with a hand on her back he reassured her the guy would more than likely be raped within a few days after being locked up.

How sick some people think that way.

Jesus Christ said in the book of Mark 2:17 "They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repent".

Yes you are right, it doesn't paint a good picture how people condemn others.

Mt 25:43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.

I believe that the change comes about due to the felon attempting to have a different outlook on life. Some turn to satanism, homosexuality, ...and Islam. When you are locked up for a long period of time, I am sure you would begin to deconstruct the things that you were once thought were familiar. It is my belief that this is what happens in many prisons. The inmates are starting to question their God, their reality, their sexuality. Maybe in some instances, it could be a blessing depending on what aspects of Islam that inmate chooses to incorporate in his life.

In jail they feel forgotten, lost, without hope. Until they hear the good new of the gospel of Jesus the Christ. Who died for their sins (and yours). They hear there is hope, there is salvation. They hear that there IS someone who really does love them. They hear they haven't been forgotten. And when one gets on their knees and confesses all of their sins to a loving and understanding God it is very cleansing! They are then a new creature full of hope.
The bible says when a sinner repents and comes to Christ Jesus the Angels in heaven rejoice! Think about how wonderful that is.

Well, if I were in a jail cell or prison, I would certainly be seeking the protection of some higher power. Some probably do it because it looks good, but others I think simply find themselves at a very low, low point in life and look to a higher power to deal with their situation and life problems. Ask Chuck Colson, I think he could tell you more.

there are all kinds of people in jails/prisons and just as many reasons why people turn there livers over to God I myself went to the lord for strength to make it through the hell I had put myself in and I had plenty of time to read the bible and other books and go to church to find out what Gods will was for me and I came to the conclusion that God wants us to seek him instead of all the things we seek to full fill our lives and I also found out that God wants to bless us. I am nowhere near perfect but then again no one but Jesus was perfect. I try to stay in contact with God daily and when I pray about things before I do them he always shows me the way to go and that keeps from doing Stupid things

Conversion to religion or beliefs in a higher power can often times be attributed to the incarcerated persons realization that they have reached bottom in their life. They see a jail house conversion as a way to salvation in their life and after life.

There are those, also, who perceive that said conversion will look good to a parole board, and they immerse themselves in self improvement projects with hopes for early release.

Most offenders are addicts, either to drugs or to crime. In jail the only thing they have access to is mediocre education or religion so they become addicted to religion. As soon as they get out into the world, a majority of them do not stay converted, they go right back to their old ways.

In other cases they think that a conversion will help them get out sooner so they follow the religious path in order to try to convince their world that they have changed. They will do whatever it takes to get out and religion is easy access.

Without doubt many are faking "change". Pain and suffering or the things that cause humanity to trully turn to God. Jesus was critized for being in wine cellers with the wine "bibbers". I'm sure he knew where to find those with remorse & contrite hearts.

I believe that people who find themselves in jail or prison are searching for something better out of life. they are more willing to try religion when they are, "at the end of their ropes" and feel as though they have nothing else to loose by trying something new, as in testing to see if God is real. BUT I have a newsflash for you - - - GOD IS REAL ! ! ! Try Him, He promises to NEVER leave you or FORSAKE you, how many friends will make that kind of promise ? ? ?

Because the have a lot of time on their hands, to think and to read, and maybe they actually realize there's nothing else left but to turn to God.

Remember - Jesus went after the "lost" sheep
