- Can an 18 year old purchase a handgun if they live in Ohio? Either in another state or online? Also, can they have possession of the gun (like have it in car or in a holster) if it is unloaded? Thanks!

I have lived in Ohio all my life (39 years). Federal law stipulates the age of 21 for handgun purchases. Eighteen year olds can legally possess handguns in the state. However, those who are UNDER 21 are prohibited from purchasing common handgun ammunition (and this includes .22 rimfire due to so many .22 caliber pistols in existence). Guns transported via automobile must be locked up and unloaded or if they are on the seat must have the action open and no ammo can be present. Anything else requires a CCW permit.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE 21 TO PURCHASE SHOTGUNS, RIFLES, OR MUZZLELOADERS!

Federal law says you must be 21 to purchase and 18 to possess in most circumstances. No supervision required. State law may differ. I have two handguns ready to give to my son in just under 11 months.

must be 21 to buy any type of firearm. 18 if it was purchased by parent. then you have to be with a guardian when you carry it. i live in ohio. owned guns sence i was 7 years old. but thanks to idiots, and bleeding heart liberals, times have changed.
