Okay everything I have read says that Pugs are hard to housetrain, but it doesn't say why. Does anyone have anything that worked for them housetraining their Pug? Ours is a 6 month old neutered male, well mannered well trained. He is COMPLETELY crate trained. But, when I let him in the house after being outside, he doesn't signal that he needs to go out. I always let him out right after removing him from the crate, after he eats or drinks, and before I put him in his crate to make sure he goes "potty", but he still goes potty in my house. Any ideas? Any help would be great. I have housetrained a dog before, but this little man is proving to be more difficult.

I LOOOOVE my pug, he is the most amazing dog in the world. However, he is very stubborn and that is exactly why they are hard. They are very strong willed, so it may take you up til he's about a year to have it mastered. Yes I know that sounds long, you'll probably get it before, but my pug was awful at house breaking until about a year and a half and then it clicked. Now, I swear he will hold it for 12 hrs if it's raining so he won't have to get wet.

Oh almost forgot, don't leave him unsupervised ever out of the crate. That is where the problems begin. The second you catch him in the middle of the act take him immediately outside even if he's already been out. He'll connect the dots if you costantly take him out. Over do it in the beginning, and wait out there for a while even if you just get a little bit out of him and you praise him to death, that is the best way.

Good luck, you will just love him. They are perfect dogs.

PS: for pugs don't paper train them they often will use rugs as a substitute when the paper is gone.

The best suggestion i can give you is to make sure you clean the area that he as went potty in the house very very good,, i use a product called "Out" and you can get this at petco or petsmart, this is getting the smell out,,, you may not smell the pee or poop but he sure can if its not cleaned very well, you have done a great job with the crate training I was going to suggest that but you have already crate trained him,, the next thing i would suggest you do is keep your eyes on him with every move he makes and when you see any signs of him having to use the potty by going in circles or sniffing, take him right away, also make sure you dont bring him back in untill he has potty, or if he only pees out side and not poops, then take him in for 15 mins and take him back out for him to try agian, and repeat this process,, i have had a stubburn Min Pin one time and to him almost 8 months to get him potty trained but i was consistant and made a big fuss over him when he went out and potty,, but sorry i havent had a pug but its just the dog its self it doesnt have anything to do with the breed so you must have a stubburn pup on your hands lol but with a complete routin and consisantacy he will get the hang of it and learn he isnt suppose to go into the house,,, I hope this has helped and good luck and one more thing you could try is get a bell and hang it on the door and ring it when its potty time and take your pups paw and ring for him,,, i had to do this with one of my min pins and he got the hang of it and now he is the only one out of all 4 my min pins and 2 Yorkies that rings the bell so you could try this and see if it will work,, just keep working with him and he will learn,,, Happy New Year

the way i house trained my dog takes a while but it works: cover the floor of the room the dog stays in when you are gone in newspaper (most likely the kitchen) the dog will do his business on the newspaper because there is no where else to go. after a while remove one sheet of newspaper. the dog should still poo on the newspaper and hopefully not the empty spot. gradually remove all sheets, one at a time a day at a time until there is one left. now that the dog is trained to poo on paper, move the paper near the door. the next day, move the paper OUTSIDE. after the dog gets used to pooing on the paper outside for a long time (maybbe a month) get rid of the paper all together and he should just naturally go outside. it worked for me but i dont have a pug.

crate training is the best way to housetraining. The crate (in the puppies head) is a home to them... so u can leave it or not want it to make a mess *Just put it in the crate*....

I think the little stinker is playing you. Obviously he is old enough to know better. I would go to Petsmart or Petco....and get a male belly band for him or get the girly diaper....you put the pad in and make him wear it. Take him out at him normal times. He only has to wear it when he has gone pee pee in the house....immediately put it on him and tell him why. When he goes outside and does his business give him a little treat ...praise him....and keep the band off...unless he has an accident....start over.....He will catch on...otherwise he will be 5 years before you know it and he won't be hous broken....The crate is good though...nice job there! :)

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Learn more http://OnlineDogTraining.enle.info/?p7Ro

The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don’t achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren’t putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.

The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.

Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.

my doggie wants to say something to you. here he is..;

" one of the lessons i have learn is how to be clean and not make a mess in your house. everytime i eat, drink, or wake up, please take me outside so that i can pee and poo outside your house. or you can train me to go on newspaper at first. when i go outside to poo and pee, tell me i am a good dog. you can use a phrase like "lets go outside!" and i will soon learn what you want me to do. shouting at me if i make a mess only frightens me.

i may have accidents that you will have to clean up, use rubber gloves and a cloth with some warm water and disinfectant to take the smell away. if the spot still smells, i will think that it is the right place to use and may go there again. " - cyrus (my pug)

there you go! now you know.. just take him outside after he eats so that he will use to pee and poo outside.
