Jock itch is caused by the same fungus that causes athlete's foot. It ranges from a slight redness to nasty discoloration with oozing. It's easily cured with various over the counter anti fungal powders or sprays (if you're to embarrassed to get a jock itch powder, the athlete's foot ones will work just fine).

Two thoughts: 1) Are you using anti-bacterial soap in the area. If so, stop! Anti-bacterial soap kills all the beneficial bacteria that keep fungus from taking over your skin. Go to a health food store and ask for some pro-biotics (not kidding - that's what they are called). Or get some yogurt with live cultures. Your skin was never meant to be sterile, and if you destroy the normal flora, fungus have a big population explosion. The only way to keep fungus down is to encourage the good bacteria. 2) Have you shaved the area? Hair cuts way down on chafing, and it also helps air circulate down there, and fungus like moist areas with poor air circulation. Get some Gold Bond powder to use until the hair grows out -- that will keep you a bit drier. Aloe vera gel (sold for sunburn) can also help keep you more comfortable. But letting the hair grow is the most important thing. If you have not been shaving or using the anti-bacterial soap, then your problem may be more serious, and seeing a doctor may be the only option. Good luck!

Fungal infection.
There are several medications for this. Ask the pharmisist for a good cream to get rid of fungal infection.
Very comon and easy to treat.
There also is a viral infection that will cause itch in this area and under the arms and along the waist line where the belt rides. This will need a doctors attention.

Could be different things, If you had sex with a girl that had a yeast infection she could have spread it to you causing you to itch and be red and sore. Or could be craps, which is like having lice except it's on your boy toy. Might be in your best interest to get a physician to take a look at it and get you an antibiotic to clear it up. I wouldn't take any chances and a doctor isn't going to think anything about it anyway, they see it all the time.
