how would i get list of homes in my area?

that i can own if i pay the taxes that are owed

The first answer is correct. However, many areas don't just sell the home for the amount of taxes owed. They auction the home with the tax amount as the minimum bid. The prior owner may also have the right to 'redeem' the property within a certain time frame. Be sure you know EXACTLY what you are buying before you commit any money.

Contact your local county courthouse. They should have a listing of all the properties going through foreclosure because of tax liens.
