I hadn't eaten any chocolate since 2004, because I've been eating a low-fat, low-sugar diet for the sake of my health. My sugar instake is probably a couple of teaspoons worth a day.

My best friend (who is always telling me how healthy chocolate is) gave me a very few good-quality chocolates with my Christmas present, and I ate them for the sake of politeness.

Even though I used to love chocolate, they didn't really taste good to me (I'm not used to sweet things any more), and I got a headache and nausea after eating them. That night I slept very heavily for about 9 or 10 hours and woke up feeling as if I'd been drugged. Within 24 hours I felt normal again, except for never wanting to eat chocolate again!

Is this normal after eating chocolate after a long break from it?

Usually when you take a break from eating foods loaded with sugar and then start eating them again, your body isn't used to the sugar and it can have a negative affect. That doesn't mean it will do your body harm, it's just that your body isn't used to it. My dad had gastric bypass surgery and after being on a strict diet, he very rarely eats greasy foods or lots of sugary foods because it makes him sick. But someone who eats sugary foods on a regular basis is used to the sugar, therefore it doesn't bother them. Also, some people just can't eat chocolate because it gives them headaches or makes them feel horrible. Everyone's body is different and everyone will have a different reaction.

I hope you are feeling better now. I think the batch you got must have gone bad. Chocolate can go bad after a certain date and without refrigeration.

Chocolate is also loaded with fat.... if you have been on an extremely low fat diet then it was probably a reaction to the fat.
