I have the same problem. Mine is arthritis, and when I walk a lot or take my ballet classes, over-use causes pain into my toes. One thing you might try that both my sister and I have found to be marvelous is Arnica Cream (sometimes advertised as Arnica SL cream) The cream is used to reduce inflammation and decrease pain, and I find it to work really well. One description of it is:

Arnica (Arnica Montana) is a homeopathic anti-inflammatory that may be used for traumatic injury, bruises, strained joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, tensive backache, concussion, stroke, heart strain and reduces pain and bleeding after surgery.

It is non-greasy, and has no odor. You have to use it several times a day. It so relieves my pain! There are many websites that sell it or describe it if you just put in the term, "Arnica." I've provide one site below which explains it pretty thoroughly.

Could be your instep of your shoe. Make sure that your shoes are not too tight and have plenty of room. When I have this problem I do not tie my shoes.
