If so, is he/she more trouble or convienence? I am looking to but a St. Bernard and I'm trying to find out the pros and cons and which overpowers the other.

I have a saint. He was rescued from a bad breeder at 5 months old. He had never been socialized and was very very shy. he spent 13 days in the vet from parvo the same day as the rescue he was left there. Considering what the dog had been through in his life already i had my questions about the kind of dog he would become............
He is a year old now................
He loves everything and everyone.................
ver very playful, and their leg strength alone can knock you over.................
He does not eat near the amount you would think they do because of their size. Raw is great for a saint bernard, but a good quality kibble works too. In dog food he will eat about 4 cups of food per feeding,(twice daily) but he also gets snacks in between meals. (sometimes) I personally feed raw to mine.
The slobbering only happens with mine when he gets excited, but i have been told that the slobbering will really come when he gets older..............
ver very gentle and loving......................
great temperment with kids and other people, they can get a bit rough in their play............
They are very head strong and hard headed, even though they are smart dogs they have a tendancy to ignore you and try your patience.........................
Do i regret getting mine???? NO in fact i would take a couple more, I LOVE this breed.
Feeding your saint twice daily is recommended as the breed is prone to bloat and bloat kills. this is common in all big deep chested dogs. feeding them a couple times a day helps prevent the gulping of the food and helps eliminate bloat......

I have Newfies. They share some same characteristics. There is the drool. The hair. The space requirement. The increased vet bills. Health problems. They eat a fair amount. They need training and socialization.
Saints can be more on the aggressive side of the temperment scale though.
Think LONG about it!!!

Saints are great dogs if you have the space and can deal with the hair and slobber.
They could drownd a human in dog spit.
For the most part they are good natured dogs just large and they can knock a person down and they will not meaning to.
They shed a fair amount and they DROOL alot.
So keep a towel handy for wiping up and enjoy.

I was raised with st. Bernards, they are really sweet and loyal dogs, the only bad thing i can think of is they slobber alot, and they are big, so they aren't real good inside dogs, their tails are dangerous lol... overall they are good dogs to have.

I have a Bernese Mountain Dog. They have similar temperaments, but they do not drool and are not that big (usually 80-100 lbs).
