I happen to like fruit cake. Taste it. If it seems like something you would like to eat - then eat it! Nuking a piece in a the microwave sometimes helps out the "weaker" ones. If you just plain can't stand it, you have two options. Give it to the birds for New Years (hence the origin of the term : This is for the birds!) or re-gift it next year to whomever gave it to you.

Contrary to popular myth, fruitcake can be quite good. But take it in relatively thin slices, and don't eat too many in one sitting. It gets a bad rap, maybe because some folks can't bake a good one.

One saying has it there's only ONE fruitcake in the whole world -- and people just pass it from hand to hand very quickly!

Throw it in the bin, or you can make a fruit cake triffle out of it.

Cut it in very thin slices like bread, and toast. Then serve it warm with a scoop of your favorite icecream on top. Yummy!
