I just got done with physical therapy on a stress fracture in my leg. For the therapy she used an ultrasound machine. I was just wondering why it hurt so dang much.

Ultrasound has been used in the treatment of fracture healing, Although I choose not to use it for this reason as the research behind it is quite vague. It's preferred purpose is to increase circulation to muscles and cause micorstreaming of fludid around the cells of soft tissues (although the reseach behind this is limited and I still use ultrasound rarely). In these cases, it is painless. When used over a site that may have a potential stress fracture, it is theorized that the soundwaves cause the two opposing ends of the stress fracture to vibrate on each other...this is a painful phenomenon.

tell the physio it hurts, it should feel warm but not hurt. The pain is if they stay in one place to long or don't move fast enough, you "feel the echo"of the ultrasound bouncing between your bone and the sound head. If its really close to the bone it might be unavoidable, but let them know anyway.

Probably because of the fracture in your leg. I had ultraounds done when I was preggers. Besides it being cold from the jell, I didn't really feel anything.

I'm a nurse, because it vibrates to the problem and/or fracture to promote healing. Did you inform them of the pain? It is possible for them to turn it down or even stop for a moment. Please tell them this if you have to return for another appointment.

It hurts because of the pressure that they put on an area that is already painful. It will help to heal you though.
