its around six inches long if left unshaven, but lately i have been getting it trimmed at the barber shop. he seems to act normal around it. is it? or is it likely that he is also afflicted with the odd growth.

If a hair has a purple look to it, then it's normal. But, if it has a odor, then I would go to my doctor. You never know if it could be just your skin around the hairs creating the odor, or something else.
