Okay, the best way is to go to Japan, but as someone said, that's almost all the time impossible.

So, since I'm Japanese, one thing that I'm going to tell you, is that PLEASE, don't rely on anime/manga as the only source! I have people in my school listening/looking/reading at these things, and they way they talk is terrible! The guys talking like girls, and girls talking like guys, and people hardly speak that way! Also, if you ever go to Japan or meet Japanese people, and start talking in that way or talk about anime/manga all the time, people are going to look at you weird, unless the person you are talking to is an otaku.

I recommend, however, taking a class at a college, if not offered in high school (although I'm not sure if you're in high school).
Some community colleges offer it, and they are probably the best bet. You would then be able to learn grammer, the pronunciation, writing, etc. The books sold at Borders, Barnes and Nobles are okay: some books have mistakes in it so be aware (since I had a friend who had a book that teaches you Japanese, and I found some mistakes...I forgot what brand it was, sorry!).

If you are getting a tutor in Japanese, I recommend that you get a male teacher if you are a male, and a female teacher if you are a female. That's because Japanese have masculine vs. feminine way of talking, and if the teacher is talking in a feminine way, then you might start talking in that way too (okay if you are a girl, but will freak other Japanese people if you are a guy). Also, try finding someone who speak in standard Japanese, since there are many dialects in Japan (they are almost all the same, with some exceptions, but the intonations of words might be different).

It's great that so many people are learning Japanese today, but unfortunately, some people are learning for some weird reasons (which I'm unhappy about sometimes. For example, reading erotic magazines! Oh please! That drives me insane!)

Well, it might not be the easiest language, so please don't give up and don't get discouraged! If you have any questions, you can always ask here! Ganbatte-ne! (Good luck!)

Everyone always says "Go to Japan", and of course that's the best way, but most people can't do that, so I think the next best thing is to take a class. If you are out of high school or will soon be out of high school, you should look for a college that offers Japanese as a major or minor (depending on which you prefer).

Another option is to find Japanese to speak to. If you already know some, then talk to them. If not, you can try going to a nearby university and seeing if you talk to the Japanese exchange students.

lemme tell you something about learning japanese. There is no easy way to do it. independant study worked fine for a while, but it can get really boring. Pimsleur cd's were probably the most helpfull, but there is no substitute for a good classroom experience, because japanese can get really confusing. i recomend looking into non-credit college courses you can take on your own time, or going to college for it.
-hope this helps, and good luck!
