It's not people's faults you disrespect. You disrespect their devotion to something you believe is meaningless. But imagine there is an innocent little girl who has a flower in a pot. Everyday she tends to the plant, gives it waters, makes sure the pot is clean... Now the flower is not a particularly rare or beautiful flower, but the girl has devoted herself to it. Sure to you the flower is meaningless, "a waste of time" but to the girl there is meaning as there is meaning to wherever we give it. Why question the girl for tending to her flower in a pot? Why even insult her? If your fight is with politics I suggest you put on a suit and campaign for the congressmen of your choice ~ not throw around useless insults that have no bearing on society.

Because they can do it without fear, there are no consequences.You could be sure that these loudmouths would not say a peep but be praying 5 times a day in Saudi Arabia and persecuting unbelievers.
It is also like getting a wife used to abuse, if you insult here enough she will eventually stop caring that you do it, it is a way of attacking and trying to destroy without physical force. If they insult us all the time then it will be normal and there will be no more stopping them and nothing wil be considered sacro-sanct, it is a way of asserting a freedom, but which shows they are not free. Because a truly free person does not think abnout these or exhibit an obsessive compulsive behavior night and day.
Lastly it is psuedo-intellectualism, individuals educated beyond their intelligence leads to sophomorism.

The flower is not imaginary.
You pray to an invisible entity who has produced no evidence of existence. You follow a 2000 year old superstition based on even okder superstitions.
You see natural occurences and attribute supernatural causes to them because you do not understand them just as they did in ancient times. There is no excuse for that because you have access to an education which you choose not to understand or believe.

The flower, the pot, and its growth are all real. It's alive because that girl cared for it. Because of her actions it lives and is healthy. That has a great sense of achievement.
This is totally different example of what you are aiming at. You are blind if you believe this is a good metaphor.

its easy to attack a religion because there is no scientific fact in it that can't be argued.
its the bully, just as much as a follower of a religion of any kind that uses bullying to try and convince other people. oh yes, a number of the fundamentalists in christianity, and so it seems, a number of muslim sects, all of whom would be willing to kill us to prove they are right.

I don't mock religion, I question religion. There's a difference. Nothing can be undermined that has a solid foundation. If someone's beliefs are too weak to withstand intelligent debate, that is not my problem.
