It would be wrong if the English-speaking person were a stranger--BUT, if that person is a friend of the two Spanish-speaking people, I would say that they were being rude to him/her by not including him/her in the conversation.

For the same reason why many British citizens don't know a foreign language and other Europeans know several. There is less incentive for native English speakers to learn a foreign language than there is for non-native English speakers to learn English. English is the dominant language for computers, the internet, airlines, international trade and commerce, and global affairs. While this may change in the future, English will likely remain the dominant language for many decades. In the United States, there is a huge incentive for Hispanic people to learn English quickly. Knowing English is a prerequisite to obtaining higher education and a good job. There is no equal incentive for non-Hispanics to learn Spanish. That's not to say that non-Hispanics can't learn to speak Spanish fluently. I myself did.

In this country you can speak any language that you want.

Where I have a problem, is when I see signs or forms in government offices in a language other than English. In this case, this is America and English is our language. What I am trying to say is, we don't cater to someone who speaks, say Spanish. If we are going to accommodate the Spanish speaking individual, what about the French speaking person? Or Russian? Or Chinese?

No. When you come here, you can speak any language that you choose, but our language is English. It is the same in every other country. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

I think everyone has the right of talking the way he wants. So if they wanna speak Spanish, why not?
(If the American is a friend and understands no Spanish, it would be better to talk English, of course...)

I've never had anyone actually come up to me and say "speak English" ...

... but one time, I was sitting in a mall's food court speaking Spanish with my friend, and I overheard some old guy say to his friend, "This is America, so why don't these people learn to speak English?"

So I just politely said to him, "It's not necessary for us to learn English, sir, because we already know how to speak it."

He kept quiet after that. I guess he had assumed that we didn't understand English, and I think he was pretty embarrassed when he realized that we understood every word he said.

I would think it rather rude of someone not involved in a conversation to assume that he could direct how that conversation ought to be conducted, but I would also mention to you that learning English might be a very profitable and even enjoyable experience. I spent many years teaching English as a Second Language and no one ever regretted learning it. It's a difficult language at first, but it can be a beautiful and accurate tool to express yourself.

If the two were speaking Spanish to each other and the other person wasn't involved in their conversation, then it's very rude to tell them to speak English. None of your business so stay out of it. English isn't the official language of the US, no language is, so no one has the right to say "speak English". They have the right to speak whatever they want to speak.

Well if a spanish person is speaking to someone who is also spanish and someone who is not spanish interrupts ands says speak english we are in america then i believe that they need to mind their business. In america we have freedom of speech and you were not even talking to them. You should continue on with your conversation with the other person who speaks spanish and ignore the idiot who interrupted you.

I can see both sides of this issue; but personally, I think that people living and working in our country should learn our language. I work closely with three Chinese people who speak minimal English. It is highly annoying, especially when there is a problem, to work with people who don't understand what I am saying.

However, it would be rude for me to simply walk up to two Spanish speakers, Russian speakers, or Chinese speakers; interrupt them; and order them with not so much as a "please" to speak my language.

What I am saying is, the asker's scenario would be improper. But it is also rude of foreigners to live in our country and not speak English.

You mean why do people who don't speak Spanish tell hispanic people to speak English when they talk to eachother right? It's rude, and I believe they say it so that they can know they're conversation. People get paranoid thinking someone is talk bs about them, and speaking it in another language. People can speak the way they want. If they don't want you to know what they are saying, then they don't want you to know.
