hmmm.... maybe something happened to him when he was small... or his parents... that made him not want to think about dating... maybe he doesn't want to get hurt?? or maybe he wants to focus on his studies and not date?

Hang out with him. Since he's never really had a real g/f he's probably just intimidated by dating and tlaking to a girl. Just talk to him, hang out, and see what goes form there. He's the dating type, that was just an excuse for "i don't know what to do"
