"Unfortunately, skin will not bounce back in its pure state if it's been stretched by rapid growth due to pregnancy, weight gain, or extreme weight loss. Instead, it becomes decorated by a form of scarring called stretch marks, or striae. Stretch marks often start off as reddish or purplish in color, then become glossy skin that appears streaked in silver or white."

Loosing weight does not cause them - gaining weight does! This is why they tend to develop on womens hips and breasts and men often get them on muscles after puberty.
It happens when you grow quickly and the skin can't make collagen quickly enough to keep up. You get breaks in the collagen under the skin and this creates red or purple marks which fade to white in time and show up bad when you have a tan!
Applying an effective moisturiser during growth periods like puberty or pregnancy can reduce their formation.
Once they are there I don't know any ways to get rid of them but some people say Bio Oil helps a lot - it is good for scars and stretch marks are a lot like scars which also lack collagen.

Your skin's elasticity greatly affects how prone you are to getting stretch marks. Skin elasticity is hereditary. I believe the gene is carried on the mother's side, although both men and women can get stretch marks. Men's skin is typically tougher than women's, which is why stretch marks are more of a problem for women. You can get stretch marks by gaining and then losing weight too quickly. You can also get them by lifting weights and even just working out (pretty much anything that involved stretching the skin!). Stretch marks are NOT just something that big or inactive people get.

They are often the result of stretching the skin in pregnancy or significant short term weight gain or. The result from overstretching of the skin, which disrupts the normal production of collagen, causing a scar. Stretch marks can also be caused by exercises. In this case muscle grows faster than your skin and surrounding tissue, thus leaving stretch marks.

In the words of the infamous Katt Williams "either you were big and you got small or you were small and got big" LOL. No really, losing weight can cause stretch marks, the elasticity of the skin is a major factor. Body builders often have stretch marks.

Usually irregular weight loss or weight gain. Basically the skin looses elasticity. Younger women often see it in their breasts due to the change in size. Athletes see it due to change in weight. Pregnant women due to the over stretching of the skin and lack of elasticity.
When you first see them put Cocoa Butter on them. When they are red, that is your best bet at making them fade. When they turn white, the chances of them fading are pretty low.

Pregnancy is another reason..
FYI: Best way to get rid of them is using Vit E on it.
Won't get rid of them completely however it may help lessen the visibility!

if you bulk up a lot, as in muscle or fat the skin streches and isnt the same color, or you are losing weight and the skin is becoming less elastic.
