I've been having problems with dry skin on my face and hands. After seeing a dermatologist a few weeks ago, I've started using facial moisturizer on both my hands and face. It seems to help for a little bit...but then the dry skin comes back. I've also been using acne soap on my face(at the dermatologist's recommendation), but after my skin started to become extremely dry, I stopped the treatment (two days ago) and have been washing my face with Dove Soap.

Anyway, I'm just wondering...what could be causing this problem? Is it a lack of moisture in the air(because it's winter), diet, using the moisturizer, the acne soap treatment, or maybe a combination of all of them? Or maybe something I haven't thought of?

The answer is YES....to all of the possibilities. First of all you have to hydrate yourself well to have nice, moist plump skin. During the winter when you're air is dry, the lack of humidity will make you into a snake before you know it. Get a humidifier; add a pinch of salt to the water, and keep it going, especially at night. When you wash with "treatment" soaps, they will dry out your skin. I like the fact that you changed to Dove, a little goes a long way. Oatmeal wrapped in a wash cloth, wet it of course, and wash your face...makes a great cleanser without drying out your skin. Any soap/water combination will dry your skin so; when you're finished bathing, pat yourself dry, and IMMEDIATELY apply a moisturizing lotion to your legs, arms, face, hands, feet. Once that is basically dry you can cover your hands and cuticles with Vasiline lightly, and your feet (then put on socks before bed). This will ensure that the moisture stays put! If you're washing your hands during the day, keep a little hand lotion close at hand (or vasiline). Drop the caffiene cause it will irritate your bladder and dehydrate you. It's a lot of work being soft and moist, isn't it? But it won't take long to get your hydration back and it will be a lot easier to manage. Godloveya. And thanks for asking a good question that can help others!

Your skin is naturally dry, and that's just the way it is. Mine is the same. You definitely should not wash your face with a soap (dove, or other, doesn't matter)!! Always wash it with a good cleanser, not soap! I use "Soy Face Cleanser" by Fresh; I bought it in Sephora. But I am sure there many other good and less expensive ones; just look for "for dry skin" label. Dry skin constantly produces dead cells that clog and infect pores; that's why you might get acne. Once you manage to keep your skin moisturized, the acne will be gone. I use the HydrAction one by Dior. But the really good hydrating cream is Ponds that can be bought in Walmart and is inexpensive. Just look for the "dry skin cream" one; it has a blue (not green!) cap. With my extra-dry skin problems that I had since childhood, Ponds gives the best hydration than multiple other ones I had tried. It also doesn't clog pores, that is very important with dry skin.

If you do use the cortisone cream like the one poster said to do, make sure not to use it on your face longer than a few days. It can cause demodex folliculitis (face mites). You cant see them but they make your dace red and extremely itchy and can be seen under a microscope and they take forever to treat.
