Like others have said, you can't switch until your active duty enlistment is over. If you are about to get out of the active service then see a reserve (Guard or Army Reserve) liasion on your base. They can help get in without having too long a break in service.

I left the active service back in the late 80's and got in the National Guard. I did that because I found I just missed the uniform too much. It was one of the best things I have ever done. I have 25+ years now so I'll have a retirement down the road and I've enjoyed the service even with two deployments.

How about former military?

You can switch after you finish out your current enlistment. As far as MOS... you can OJT some of the training, online or correspondence course other parts but eventually they'll schedule you for as much AIT as is required to finish requal'ing you for your new job skill. The NG distributes their units geographically so where ever you land the local unit may or may not have a slot for your current MOS. If they don't some will be retraining in your future. If they do have a slot open for your MOS then you can start immediately upon EOD'ing w/ the NG. Same holds true for promotions. My buddy picked up a platoon leader slot in a neighboring unit but in order to get the promotion he had to transition from medic to MP.

Your MOS should have no bearing on a switch from RA to NG. You may have to return to BCT or AIT for RT id your MOS is NR. It is likely though that you will need SCP from you BC or PC, or else have to renegotiate at the end of your enlistment.

Dependant on how long you have been in, and what your MOS is, you may be able to Palace Chase or whatever the term is. Contact a recruiter, they will fill you in if you qualify for one of the programs. Its what I did at one point.
