The best thing I've found to get my three cats to stop scratching is a product called Feliway. It was recommended by my vet. You spray it on the corner of the couch or wherever they are scratching. You have to reapply daily. I think it has a pheremone in it that makes them happy. They will quickly (in a matter of days) stop scratching that area. Once they've stopped I reapply only every week or so to remind them. Of course, you have to provide alternate areas where it is okay to scratch.

Also, be sure to offer both horizontal (like scratch pads) and vertical (like scratching posts) surfaces depending on whether your cat prefers to scratch stretched up or on a level surface.

Another thing I did when I was desperate was to cover the corner of the furniture where one of my cats was scratching with some tinfoil. They don't like the feel or sound of it against their claws.

Good luck!

Is this your first cat? If so you should know there is no way to stop it scratching. People who say they have done so aren't truthful. Cats scratch to mark teritory, hone their claws, and for relaxation. It is in their genes. They can't stop it and no one can make them. The best you can do is hope they contain the destruction to an acceptable area like a post but they won't always. Just go look at someone's house with a cat who has been "Trained" not to scratch. Everything in it has claw marks. Your best option is to de-claw. This is a easy and humane way to solve the problem. It is very minor surgery compared to spaying and they recover fast. They still think they have claws and scratch like normal. It leaves no lasting effect other than lack of claws. You will have to keep it inside after that because it won't be able to climb trees as well to escape dogs. In all it's the best option for everyone.

Go to the nearest pet shop and bye a scratching pole that they sell there I have cats of my own I have 4 and it has helped the scratching of the furniture for me.
About the climbing on the furniture I really don't think you can change that, but in the meanwhile they will probably stop.

Get "soft paws" nail caps for the kitten. He will still climb and scratch but there will be a lot less damage because the nail caps are soft. He will calm down as he matures.

We had the same problem and I invested in a "scat mat". They come in different sizes and shapes and they have worked great for us. You can find them at www.petedge.com among other places. Initially, they are a little bit of an investment, but much cheaper than buying a new couch. Good luck

Petco sells double-face tape you put on the areas he claws. It works well. Don't de-claw him. Others will say glue the claw "caps" on them but I've never tried them on my kitties.
