Snowshoes are recognized by The International Cat Association (TICA) but not by The Cat Fanciers Association-- and the latter seem to sponsor more shows. For a breed to be recognized, it has to go through several years of provisional showing, written description of what the breed should look like, etc. Ragdolls have recently been accepted, I believe, but Ragamuffins are still provisional.

They should be eligible in the household pet category even if they aren't purebreds, by the way.

Check out the websites www.cfa.org and www.tica.org for more information.

Snowshoes started out as a color breed, a cross between American Shorthair and the Siamese. So in the eyes of CFA its a mixed breed cat. Eventually if enough people breed registered shorthairs and siamese the CFA will begin to recognize it. At the shelter we saw a lot of Snowshoe colored kitties.

The only breeds that can compete at professional cat shows are those recognized by the Cat Fanciers of America. (Like the American Kennel Club, but for cats.) Snowshoes aren't recognized as a distinguishable separate breed by them. You can get information about the breeds that are recognized on their website at http://www.cfa.org.

Had one, now have a Ragdoll. The Snowshoe isn't eligible because it is a cross.

I have a Snowshoe, and she's a sweetie. Unfortunately, she's older and now suffering from kidney disease. I don't think the CFA officially recognizes them, but that could change in the future. Hopefully, it will!
