People go to war when their political masters tell them to. It is perfectly within the rights of government to say "You will go to war. If you do not we will shoot you." They did it for the first world war, what's to stop them doing it now? Even if they decided to spare your life they could still just as easily say "Go to war or go to prison for 15 years" If those in power decide that we need oil, and we need a war to get it then there is nothing - not one thing - you can do to stop them. In both the US and the UK ALL the major political parties are exactly the same. They're both right of the centre, with conservative policies. You cannot vote them out of power, because they'll always be in power, even if it's a different person at the helm.

fr_chuck gave a good answer. If the war in Iraq was about oil, how do you explain the following:

I have not heard ONE report of a member of the US military dieing anywhere near an oil well or refinery.
Our military is fighting in cities where there is not oil.
We are not getting oil from Iraq.

If we wanted use the military to get oil, ANWR and the Gulf of Mexico are much easier targets.

Seeing that we only use roughly 16-18% of oil from the middle east, and none from Iraq, I would say that there is no chance for a war over oil in Iraq. Do you mean starting a new war in a region that we actually purchase a majority of our oil from? Because then I'd say its not likely that I'd be deployed again. Of course your question would insinuate that you are in the military, and actually have a choice where you deploy to, which is a laughable notion at best..

If there is one thing I hate more than people who believe the Iraq war was over oil, It is people who believe that and then go drive SUVs and fancy cars by themselves for the 'status' it displays. Unless you ride a bike and use no electricity (how is it generated?) you are part of the reason we supposedly went to war over oil.

NEVER. the human civilization has lived thousands of years without oil, gas, or any other fossil fuel. i fear most is that this may cause a spark to World War 3. with that nukes will be used and most likely we will all die as a human civilization. i would not gamble with oil if the price is that everyone you ever saw dies in the end. but we all die, everyone one does. the thing is if we all die at once, nobody would carryout human life.

Why does anyone think this war is about oil,

The US never took over the oil wells, they still belong to the Iraq government, and they keep the money from the wells.

In fact they have cost us billions since we rebuilt them for the Iraq government at our cost.

And since they lost production, it raised gas prices.

So anyone that knows anything about the war knows it had nothing, not one thing about the oil.

Those that preach that, merley don't know the facts are just hate bush so much they lie and don't care.

?? Hypothetical question?.... There hasn't been a war for oil other that Saddam's attack on Kuwait. But to fight in a war to stabilize the world oil price would be a good thing... so yes.

I bet people enjoy thinking it is that simple. Too bad it isn't. I won't bother typing it all out again, if you want to know, do a little research, the puzzle pieces are all there, just have to do a little logical reasoning.

Nothing to do with the cowboy image some like to portray, or a payback for his Dad but much bigger.

It all starts here: "Whether we acknowledge it or not, Islamic totalitarianism is at war with America."

Nice to see the poultry faction is still vocal.

let the world run out and see what you would do for oil! Do you not consider oil a National security issue?

No - but our servicemen/women have no choice and need our support. They have to go to war even if it is decreed by some idiot who went AWOL while he was in the service and made up stuff to get people mad enough to fight. They are doing just what they are told and sacrificing their lives daily so we know we can depend on them.
