Do you mean a male tortoiseshell or calico? Not really worth anything except as a curiousity; there are a few.

In cats, color is a sex linked characteristic, carried on the X chromosome. Black gene will always cover red on an X chromosome, so normally only a cat with two X chromosomes will show both red and black (red by itself on one and black or black and red on the other). In some cases, you have a male (XY) who carries an extra X chromosome so it's really an XXY which is why it shows both red and black and is usually sterile.

They aren't worth any more then any other colored male cat. Also male cats that are calicos or tortis are most usually sterile which makes them a higher risk for testicular cancer if not neutered.
While they aren't common they also aren't rare either. It is an old wives tale about them being worth money.

Cats shouldn't be sold. If your Grandmother is so disinterested that she would sell it she should give it away to a good loving home.
