Cats have a super fast metabolism, which means they burn energy much more quickly than other animals. Because of this they need to sleep, on average, 18 hours a day to conserve energy. This is the same reason they seek out sun spots - by lying in the sun and using the suns energy to heat their bodies, they use less of their own.

It may seem like they sleep alot but they are awake more than we know. For one thing they are up running around 1/2 the night.....I'd want to sleep most of the day too if I were up as much as they are at night. And they sleep off and on throughout the day. My cat's each have their own awake time during the day and each one is different. One is a up in the morning cat and the other 2 are late afternooners.

Cats sleep a lot during the day because they are night creatures. It is born into them to do their hunting at night. My cat is an indoor cat, she sleeps a lot during the day. How ever I can set my clock by her. She wakes me up jumping on and off my bed at 5:00am strait up, because when I first got her I gave her first feeding at this hour. Now I don't have to wake up at 5:00am to go to work, but she pesters the daylights out of me until I get up and feed her. She eats, plays around the house for about an hour then goes back to sleep until 3:30pm which is when I use to come home from work and feed her when I first got her. She then "Cat Naps" quit a bit after that until around 10:00pm or later. From then on she's up most of the night playing with her toys and looking through the blinds out the window having a good Ol' time. She don't keep me awake at night. I just know she's up because once in a while I will hear her, or when I get up for a midnight snack or what ever. So really, they don't sleep as much as you think they do. It's just that they are fully awake when we are sleeping. I bet they think we sleep a lot. :)

It only seems like they are sleeping a lot because when you are asleep, they are awake. Cats are nocturnal, and after a night of running around, they are ready for bed when the sun comes up. Also, because genetically they are hunters, they naturally save energy during the day. Before they were pets in people's homes, I am sure they saved energy for when they needed it to hunt, so I guess the modern day cat does the same.

I recently read that a kitten needs to sleep a little more than half the day, and an adult cat needs to sleep about 75% to 85% of the day. And cats don't really sleep like people do...they kinda take half-naps, and most of their nap time isn't deep sleep. More like just resting their eyes. Like others say, it has a lot to do with their genetic link to wild cats and their hunting behaviors, and the fact that they expend all their energy in short spurts.

The reason why is because the have many good super senses. And lots of them cost much energy. They run around, play, and hunted. If you have more than one cat (I do)they fight, roll around, lick your dishes and more!Wouldn`t you sleep alot if your were a cat,it`s not like your out in the wild protecting your litter ,or hunting. You would have nothing more than sleep.

Due to the genes inherited from their big kitty ancestors.
In the wild, a cat spends a LOT of energy chasing and catching it's prey. This is why housecats will still get a sudden burst of energy and gallop through the house at top speed for a few minutes every day or so. They spend all of that energy at one time, then they spend the rest of the day lazing about to make up for it.

Cats are nocturnal, so they sleep during the day and are awake at night. It seems to us they sleep a lot, but to them it's natural.

They have you flamboozled! While you're gone, they're so busy tearing up your house, they only PRETEND to sleep while you're there! LOL And you thought it was the DOG getting into the garbage???????? Silly girl...... LOL Seriously... cats are some of the busiest, most inquisitive pets there are. They can spend hours chasing a dust bunny, or keeping watch over a gopher hole, just hoping the thing pops up so they can play with it. If God asked me who I wanted to be for one hour, it would be a cat.... just to see what goes on in their minds!

They sleep when they want to, but never too much at a time. I really do not believe they sleep "so much." Maybe you just always catch them while asleep.
