What exactly was the relationship between Jonathan and David?

Samuel 18:1-4

[1] And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
[2] And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house.
[3] Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.
[4] And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.

It is clear that there was a deep love and devotion between the two more so from Johnathan but it was recriprocated by David. This was a King (King Saul) blessed Holy Union. Am I saying that they were physically intimate? No. Nor can I say that they were not. The biblical witness does not discuss this part of their lives. We do know that David have wives and concubines and lusted after Sheba which led him to desception and murder. That in it self does not make David straight either. More than likely David was Bisexual. (A different diatribe but in practicality most people are bisexual but are just not ready to face it.)

The most striking lesson from this is that there is Biblical president set by the greatest of Israelite Kings for same gender covenant relationships, sexual or not. (as we all know sex stops one you are married anyway so if you want to end gay sex let us marry...hehehe)

A more disturbing part is the positive nature of sacrificial caring in the Johnathan and David relationship in comparrision to the destructive vicious nature of the Sheba and David relationship. From a Christian perspective the Johathan and David relationship followed Christs teaching and the Sheba and David relationship is absolutely contrary to Christ's teachings.

If more people would actually read and connect topics in the Bible together they would find a far more loving, merciful, graceful and forgiving God then anything they live out. Thank God that a person's ignorance is not judged only their knowledge.

Agape Love. What Jesus expressed for each of us.

To lay down one's life for a friend.

This is the love that is expressed even today between fellow soldiers, police, and firefighters who risk their lives for others.
Jonathan and David were brothers in combat, risking their lives for their nation. Powerful and special bond.

It was primarily a covenant to be faithful to the respective descendants of the parties. David showed his covenant faithfulness when he showed mercy to Mephibosheth. (see II Samuel Chapter 9)
