There are some beautiful center pieces made of fruits, vegetables, and just green plants of different shades of green. You could use sea shells and candles, You could use different colors, shape and sizes of candles and candle holders. I saw some very lovely center pieces at a wedding one time. Her color was yellow and her brides maids wore different shades of yellow and the center pieces were lemons and southern magnolia leaves. the lemons were piled on a cake plate like a pyramid with the waxy green leaves stuck in here and there with some baby's breath and they were just beautiful and refreshing looking. So you can do lots of different things. Oh by the way, Congrats.

I am not a big fan of flowers either, or goldfish. I have seen people us apples in vases, beans, crystal looking rocks, ships with candles, picture frames on every table with a different picture of the couple as kids. I really liked the picture one because it was interesting to go to every table to look at them.
For my centerpieces I am getting "magic ice (or crystals)" from the craft store. It is that powder stuff that you add water to and it expands and can fill a vase with a crystal looking like gel substance. In the gel I am placing glow sticks the same colors as my wedding and a small tealight . The vase is actually a miniature fishbowl. The glow sticks will stay lit and illuminate the bowl for up to 8 hours... so it will be pretty all night.
You can also use seashells in a dish if that is your theme. Or a glass slipper with those rocks that you can put in a fishbowl that are all glossy.
Stay away from fish though. They are a lot of work to make sure that they dont die.
If you have a theme, work around it... country weddings you can use country items on it...

Fish require attention, something you won't have time for on the wedding day. Plus, if they die during the reception...yuk! Transporting the fish is another issue.
Try a beautiful glass bowl with some floating candles and maybe some shells or pretty stones at the bottom. You can float flowers too.

I got a little story to tell you:
a few years back I was worked at a fancy restaurant where i banquet waitresses. anyway we had a wine tasting/dinner in the banquet hall. the center pieces were fish in a bowl with floating candles just like you wanted. I wasn't to happy with it, because i can't see how that is healthy for the fish. After the banquet was done all the waitresses that wanted fish took them home. My boyfriend at the time worked there as a chef. He thought that he would impress everyone by eating a live gold fish... I absolutely for bayed him from doing it, but the jerk did it anyway.
I don't have any suggestions for cool center pieces i just wanted to share my story.
congrats.

I have seen two notable ideas:
a circular mirror laid in the center with several candles on top of it. They had some rose petals scattered around but you can skip that if you want.
another reception I went to had different things at each table. They were items they found in grandma's attic, an old bird cage, some books, a neat vase, etc. Each table had a group of items in the center and there was a little card explaining the signifigance. It was really touching. She even had her great grandmother's wedding shoes there.

Instead of fish how about two fat candles. Set the candles on a glass plate and surround with strands of fake pearls or fake crystals or beads. Then surround the whole thing with babies breath or something like it. It will look lovely and different and with out harming any fish. And your mother in law will be happy which is who you really need to be happy on this day. I know it is your day but you need to make others happy too. Lots of luck.

Put three clear cylindrical vases(all different sizes) on a 12'' by 12'' mirror tile. Fill them 1/4 of the way with clear glass marbles. Then fill them with water and top off with a floating candle. Line the mouth of the vases with ribbon to match ur wedding.

You should get big clear bowls and have candles floating in that spell out your initials or the date or something significant. Shells or something to fill it out would add a nice touch. If you know origami or something you can get a nice centerpiece with that.

I would be worried about fish dieing before the wedding is over as well as what will happen to them afterwards. There are many alternatives including candles or snacks. Something edible could be handy (such as fruit, candy, nuts, etc) or something useful (colorful fancy soaps). There are also other items such as marbles could look nice.
