To make a long story short, I found enlightenment when God spoke into my heart one day and said "Maybe Jesus really did die for your sins" At that time in my life I had totally turned my back on God and felt He had turned His face from me. I was in a very low place, but felt myself instantly transported to the highest mountaintop. I felt a flood of light and life and peace and love and joy and understanding fill my soul and drive out the hopelessness, blindness, hate, anger, ignorance and darkness.
I had never heard of anyone else having such an experience at that time. It was not until a year later I read in the Bible Jesus described this very experience when He told a religious leader named Nicodemus that "you must be born again" (See John's Gospel, Chapter 3) I realized when I read this, that's what happened to me. This was 36 years ago. As I seek God the light increases.
My testimony is this: "He delivered me from the domain of darkness, and transferred me into the Kingdom of His Beloved Son" (Colossians 1:13)

I believe in different levels of enlightenment. To me, enlightenment is simply understanding. When you see a problem and have the answer. If you've managed to come out of the hole that so often surrounds so many of us, if you are able to show others the way out, that's enlightenment.
The Shaman, the wounded healer, the person who's simply "been there" is the one with enlightenment.
I don't think it's a person who simply has book learning, or one who's retired from the world. I don't trust someone who has had it easy all their life... the little rich kid who graduates form Harvard divinity school and pastors a church, never having suffered in their life. Such a person knows little of trouble or striving. I would think enlightenment eludes them until they know what it means to hurt, suffer or strive.
Anyway, that's my thoughts.

When you turn away from all religion, and follow that forsaken path down the woods. There, in the heart of nature, will you find enlightenment. When you become one with nature, yet seperate at the same time, you will feel a bliss that only grows with each passing struggle. Yet, the divine know, and the divine will. Mother nature has her ways of bringing the light into your soul before the dawn ever breaks

Buddha meditated in the forest and came back to preach that he has achieved enlightenment.
He found out that life is mostly suffering - and to be rid of cycles of suffering for millions of years - as humans or animals or higher
beings - was to practice to reach nirvana(you no longer exist).
His discovering this Buddhist truth is called Enlightenment.

I have a Zen story for you also known as a Koan. Here is an abbreviated version
The great Zen monk Joshu finally achieved enlightenment after years of seeking and meditation. The other monks in the monastery sought him out and asked him how it felt. He replied, "As miserable as always."
Another Koan type saying for you "Someone will achieve enlightenment and some will not"
Let me end with something biblical.
"Seek and ye shall find"

By understand the universe with science you can have enlightenment. I recommend reading anything by Carl Sagan (especially "Pale Blue Dot") and buying his PBS series "Cosmos" He talks about our true place in the universe and achieving awareness.

It is a result of the influence or instruction a person of authority or superiority has on your life and perceptions. Examples: Dad's belt across your butt, the teacher who revealed your potential, the wisdom the Spirit of God imparts.

Amazing, it comes from submission to God and his will. Realizing truly your existence is for a finite time, and that our deeds will be judged.
