Same scenario as my question earlier about the marines - he's 18, had to withdraw from high school to get drug treatment, looking to get into the service when he's well. He had originally mentioned marines, but his family is pushing more for the coast guard.

The Coast Guard is the hardest service to join. I think he would have problem doing it. They only take so many people. Talk to a recruiter. They can give you better advice then anyone can.

I'm not sure about the Coast Guard, but my cousin got into the Air Force with a GED so I imagine it's possible.

The only military branch he could join at this point would be the Army. The Coast Guard is the smallest branch and the most competitive. They will not take a GED period. My brother is Active duty Coast Guard. The GC turns away people that have diplomas, they certainly won't take an ex-drug addict.

army is the ONLY option!!!

If not he can definitely get in the army.
Whatever he joins make sure he reads the entire contract word for word. Take his time. Don't be a cook! It sucks!

Yes they can. I know of people who have got into the service with felonies. Kinda like supply and demand...if they need you, they don't care what you were up to.

All other things being equal, that shouldn't be a problem... there are other test that are taken to get in.
