Dams exist as man made and natural, and made by beavers. They exist for many reasons, in the USA, dams are built on most of the main rivers like the Ohio, Mississippi, and the Missouri and other rivers. One reason is the increase the depth of water in the river so that boats can safely travel on the river, 2nd dams are used to assist in flood control, and 3rd, some dams are used to make electricity. The reason its called a dam, well some smart guy a long time ago, said Look Tonto, the river is not flowing but getting deeper, and Tonto said "Dam" them white men always messing things up. And from that day on, we call them Dams.

The most basic answer would be that they control the flow and level of water in rivers and lakes. Many dams have turbines that are rotated using flowing water. These rotating turbines can generate a Large amount of electric power. You might want to research electric power generation.

oh dammn wrong one.(forgive the joke i just couldn't resist.)it's to control water level and they don't just exsist they are built by man and animals(beavers) to control water flows and levels as well as to generate hydroelectrical power.they are called a dam for the same reason that a chair is called a chair, because that's what it is.
God bless,
