A-bigfootists, a-toothfairyists, and a-unicornists are all called "adults". People who do believe in those sort of things are called "children". Now for some reason we make a distinction when it comes to deities.

The letter A as a prefix in latin means without and the word thiesm means belief in a god or gods
If you are a Christian you are a thiest so an Athiest is someone who doesnt believing in god.
Doctors, nurses, veterinarians, and LVT's use the prefix "a" often
like afebrile, which means without a fever.

Sorry, Philosopher, you are wrong. The 'A' in Atheist means 'without' and 'theism' means 'belief in gods or devils.' You too, D-Rocker, try getting your facts straight while you work on your spelling (and the lack of a belief is not a belief!).

Atheists do tend to be anti-religion, though, because of the way history has unfolded. Also, the believers are the ones who saddled us with this name that describes what we are not. I would change 'atheist' to 'naturalist,' then believers would have to be called by the more accurate label of 'un-naturalists.'

The first answerer was incorrect, the "a" is not a shortened "anti", it is just a prefix that means no or not. "Not"theist. Atheism really isn't a new word, just the old one with a prefix.

a is a prefix that means the same thing as "anti". its not that they get their own word, its just that the root theo means god and if you believe in one god you are a monotheist (christians, muslims, jews ect..) and if you believe in multiple gods then you are a polytheist (ancient greeks and romans). the reason there are no other religious names for athiests (one who believes in no god) is that there is no seperate religious groups within athiesm. athiests all fundimentally believe in the same thing, no existance of god. im assuming that you are a christian and if you are then you are a monotheist. its not that they get their own word, its just that thats the technical term for a person who doesnt believe in god.

stay in school kid they actually know what theyre talking about.
