I am an Air Force ROTC student (on scholarship, which means I am an E-2), and my dorm overlooks a graveyard. I often hear Taps, and three shot volleys for veterans' funerals. When should I/Do I stand at attention during Taps, or the three shot volley, when I am in my civies? Do I salute the music/shots when I am outside in uniform, walking to class? What about if I am outside in civies? Thanks.

TAPS and the 21 gun salute are symbolic of the Nation's final tribute to a fallen Patriot. If you are in civies, you should stand at "Attention" (placing your right hand over your heart is optional, but shows a greater respect). If you are in uniform, you should definitely stand at "Attention" for TAPS, then render a hand salute when the 21 gun salute is fired. To not salute when the volley is fired would be about as disrespectful as not saluting when the National Anthem is played.

Good luck in your future career.

If you are in civilian clothes and outside, you only have to put your right hand over your heart and/or remove any headgear. If you are in uniform and within reasonable distance, you should stop, and render the hand salute throughout taps and the rifle volleys, at attention of course. If you are inside, you really don't have to do anything unless you just want to be hardcore.

The rifle volleys at a funeral ARE NOT a 21 gun salute. It's just rifle volleys. Gun salutes come from cannons. And the hand salute is rendered throughout military honors, not just taps.

If you are in ROTC and have to ask a bunch of strangers about military protocol, you have bigger problems than whatever the protocol is. I flunked out of boot camp, but I knew the answer to this before I ever got there.

If in civvies, you need to come to POA. Saluting is not necessary.
