They use to believe that the lighter the skin you had the better you were. I know it sounds bad, but they thought that only poorer ppl were dark. Because the poorer ppl had to stay out in the sun and work and they got darker. Tans weren't in back then.

They stayed out of the sun because it was fashionable to be fair skinned. That simple! And they powdered themselves.
I have never heard of anything being drunk to lighten skin tone. Don't see how that is possible.

Its not what they drank,They made sure they never felt the sun on their skin.Notice how their clothes covered them,and how they used a lot of rouge on their faces.
