I'm about to adopt a cat, and I'm trying to decide whether to let it sleep with me. I'm a light sleeper, so I'm thinking I won't let it sleep with me. If I don't let my cat sleep with me, will he develop behavioral problems and get destructive? If any of you don't let your cat sleep with you, please share any tips on how you get your cat to use his/her cat bed. Thanks!

You don't have to let any animal sleep on the bed you can put the pet bed in your room so they are close to you --remember that the next few days or even weeks the new family member is getting used to you and the new home --so there is some insecurity issues too---if they feel comfortable enough to be just by you then that's good--if not maybe be tolerant for a time till they feel safe to sleep alone--as far as behavior problems the only one I can think of is that they might get vocal at night or try and find a way out via the windows and make some racket that way--You can always put a cat crate by your bed and put him or her in that at night--
Good Luck and many great years together with your new found family member--

My cat used to sleep on my bed, in winter more frequently than in summer, when he often doesn't come home for the whole night.
At the age of 5 I had to tell him to stay away from the bed (which I share now with a human being...). He didn't accept the new rules immediately, but after some time he used his cushion which he had already known before.
Should you once have a partner who's not so fond of having a cat in the bed, it is better not to start at all. The fact that you're a light sleeper alone should not keep you from letting the cat into the bed.

Don't worry about it, your cat will be fine. My cats go into their room at night (full of cat furniture and it has their litter boxes) and the door is closed because they are nocturnal animals. I do this because we live in a two story house and if they were allowed to run free all night we'd hear them thumping up and down the stairs. We also have dogs that sleep in their kennels in the living room and the cats would keep them up all night!
Honestly, cats are pretty adaptable creatures and as long as they have the basics (food, water, litterbox) they're pretty much set! You might have some problems getting your cat to use it's bed instead of your couch, or wherever your cat is most comfortable. Just show the cat the bed is for him/her only and just maybe the cat will love it. Good luck with your new kitty.

One of my cats sleeps with me, one sleeps with my daughter and the other and the fosters sleep in a separate room (the door is closed at night so there are no rowdy games in the middle of the night.

Your cat will adapt to where ever you put his bed ( I have igloo type beds for those that don't sleep on the beds.

If you are a light sleeper, it may be better if it doesn't sleep with you. You could try it on your bed for a couple of nights - over the weekend perhaps when you don't have to get up early) - and then decide for sure.

Good luck with it and thank you for adopting

i won't be able to think of of any veterinarian i be attentive to and that i be attentive to a minimum of seven as I even have 4 shih tzu and 3 cats that could euthanize a cat for elimintation themes. Your cat desires a important diagnostic workup and if there's no actual subject inflicting this which will have the skill to be dealt with and/or cured then you definately've got a case for euthanasia as cats who refuse to apply the litterbox are not getting accompanied and in case you misinform a private individual or the shield they'll in simple terms locate out besides and unload the cat on somebody else or take it out in the woods and shoot it, some human beings unquestionably do this it extremely is misguided. If the scientific workup shows no clarification for this then this is beneficial to touch some cat in basic terms rescue communities as they could have some kindly farmers that could take your cat. i be attentive to i've got helped place those varieties of cats with some rural farmers and on the least they are able to pass the place they choose for to pass and are not going to be positioned down. yet to respond to your question, i do no longer think of it incredibly is unethical to euthanize a cat that isn't use the field IF thorough scientific diagnostics are finished and this is set that it is not from disease/ailment. those cats infrequently learn how to apply the field. I worked as a volunteer in lots of shelters over the final two decades and that they consistently say that when the cat is going to a sparkling domicile it incredibly is going to use the field which in my journey has in no way been actual and the cat comes actual back to the shield and it incredibly is euthanized as no person needs a cat that doesn't use the field. in simple terms call the vet and get the cat in ASAP for exams and examination. There are additionally prescription diets that shrink the urine and fecal acids to make the urge much less and gives you them greater time to make it to the clutter field.

Unlike dogs, cats are pretty independent - especially if its an older cat from a shelter. Cats from the shelter are used to roughing it on their own, and will most likely not even seek sleeping with you at night.

Kitty shouldnt develop any behavioral problems because of this, as I said unlike dogs cats are pretty indifferent and most likely wont even want to sleep in your bed until youve had him for a while and hes used to you.

A good bed for a cat are ones that have sides to them, kind of hard to explain so heres a picture of one: http://www.arcatapet.com/fullsize/8190.jpg Ive found from experience that cats feel more cozy and safe in beds like these over flat beds, but they can still see out from all sides unlike beds that are completely closed in. You can sprinkle some catnip in your cats bed, as this will attract them to it, and you can also put toys in their bed to draw them to it. All in all the cats going to use the bed when and if they want to, and theres no real way to 'make' them use it. Cats are pretty finicky, but if you make it seem attractive to them, they should learn to love their bed in no time.

Hope this helps.

We shut our bedroom door at night and the cats (3 of them ) sleep on the couch...that is until Mr. Red taught himself to open our door! He literally turns the knob so we have to get a bar to lock it! We don't let them sleep with us as they hog the entire bed and then want us to let them outside. They make noise by running around the blinds until we get up. I strongly suggest you start making your cat sleep inthe other room right away. You can't get him/her to use a cat bed per se but you can train it to sleep on it's own. Good luck.

you could always use a carrier and crate train the cat to sleep there at night and if you put it in your room that would be ideal...you just need to make sure that the cat eats, drinks and goes potty before putting it in for the night and it should sleep through the night, however, i prefer to have my cat sleep with me you would be surpised how they move with you during the night and you wont hurt it
